The principle is sound — a motor that only draws hard when the grass demands it wastes less on the easy parts of a lawn. The maker states it and this page reports it as the maker’s claim; no figure is published for what it saves.
Closer than a conventional deck, and not to the fence. Nothing cuts to a hard edge, and the strip left over is what the shears and the edging tools on this site are for. The gain is that the strip is narrower.
