Lawn seed, compared

Grass seed is sold on two numbers that have to be read together — the weight of the bag and the coverage it claims — and the ratio between them says more than either alone. A kilogram for 30 m² is a repair sowing rate; a kilogram for 50 m² is an overseeding rate on an existing lawn; sowing a new lawn takes roughly twice what overseeding takes, and the bag states which it means. What is actually in the bag is the species, and this is where the shelf separates. Ryegrass germinates in days, stands traffic and is what makes a « schnellkeimend » mixture fast; fescues are finer, slower and more drought-tolerant; smooth-stalked meadow grass creeps and repairs itself but takes three weeks to show. A mixture built for speed and one built for a fine sward are different products at the same price, and the German titles advertise the first far more loudly than the second. The germination time is quoted in days on the fast mixtures and omitted on the rest. The use column is the one to read first: repair and overseeding, new lawns, shade, play and hard wear, or drought. And the certification matters more than it sounds — seed sold in the EU carries a declared purity and germination percentage on the label, and a bag that publishes those figures is a bag whose claims can be checked.
