Garden hoses, compared

A garden hose is judged on two numbers and one word. The diameter is internal and quoted both ways in the same titles — 13 mm is a half inch, 15 mm is five eighths, 19 mm is three quarters — and it decides flow more than the tap does: at the same pressure, a 19 mm hose passes roughly twice what a 13 mm one passes. The length is what everyone buys on, 15, 25 and 30 m here, and it works against the first figure, because every extra metre costs pressure at the far end. The word is layers. A three-layer hose is a tube, a braid and a jacket; a four-layer one adds a second reinforcement, and the difference shows as resistance to kinking and to the slow bulge that ends in a split. « 4-lagig » in a German title is the single most informative thing on this shelf, and the pressure figure in bar is its measurable form. The other half of the shelf is a different product sold under the same word: the expanding hose, a latex core in a textile sleeve that triples in length under pressure and stores in a bucket. It is genuinely convenient on a balcony and it is not a substitute for a reinforced hose on a lawn — the corpus carries both, and the pages here say which is which. The material is PVC on almost everything and the plasticiser is what stiffens in the cold. Finally the fittings: many of these are sold as a set with connectors and a spray nozzle, and a bare hose plus a set of fittings rarely costs less.
