A lawn roller is a drum on a handle, and it ships empty for the obvious reason: nobody would post a hundred kilograms. That single fact governs the whole shelf. The filled weight is quoted twice on the honest listings — one figure for water, one for sand, and the gap between them is large: 75 kg filled with water against 121 kg filled with sand, on the same 50 cm drum — a 13 kg shell holding 62 kg of water or 108 kg of sand. Sand is heavier per litre, harder to get in and impossible to drain, so a sand-filled roller is a permanent installation in a shed corner while a water-filled one is emptied in a minute and hung up. The working width runs 50 to 60 cm here and the diameter around 32 cm, and the two together decide the pressure per square centimetre rather more than the weight does. What a roller is for is narrower than the marketing suggests. It firms a newly sown or newly turfed lawn so the seed or the roots make contact with soil; it pushes back the small heaves that frost leaves behind in spring; and it flattens molehills and footprints. It does not cure a bumpy lawn — that is topdressing — and rolling a lawn on heavy soil in spring compacts exactly the ground that aerating is meant to open, which is why these two families sit next to each other on this site and pull in opposite directions.
