Those are the first physical dimensions on this whole shelf. Two other carts
and three wall boxes publish none, and on a product that has to live in a shed
and fit through its door, that is not a detail.
Four wheels, and 20 cm of them
Most hose carts have two wheels and a leg. You tilt them to move them and stand
them up to use them.
Four wheels is a different object: it stands by itself, rolls in any direction,
and does not have to be held up while you are also pulling a hose.
20 cm solid rubber is the right size and the right material for a garden.
Solid rubber cannot puncture and never needs inflating. Twenty centimetres
rolls over grass, gravel and a lawn edge rather than stopping at them — small
hard wheels dig in, skid on wet grass, and cut lines into a lawn under sixty
metres of loaded hose.
The 90° unwind
Named as a feature, described as preventing tangling and kinking, and the
mechanical point is worth adding.
A hose leaving the drum across the cart’s direction of travel pulls the
cart lengthways. A hose leaving it forwards pulls the cart over.
This is the same problem another cart on this shelf solves with a fold-out
foot, approached from the other end: rather than anchoring the cart, put the
pull where the cart is stable.
Both work. Neither is present on a cart that has neither, which is how carts
end up on their faces in the middle of a lawn.
No hose
The cart alone.
On a shelf where four products include a hose — three wall boxes with fixed
20 or 30 metres, and one cart with 30 — that is the difference that decides
what the price means.
Sixty metres of hose costs a real fraction of this cart. Buying this makes
sense if you already own the hose, and it is the wrong comparison against a
product that arrives complete.
Up to 60 m, with no bore named.
A drum holds a volume. One listing on this shelf publishes its capacity three
times, once per hose diameter — 45 m at 1/2 inch, 30 m at 5/8, 20 m at 3/4 —
and the spread is more than a factor of two.
“Up to 60 m” is the best case, on the thinnest hose. Anybody with 3/4 inch hose
should read it as considerably less and nothing published here says how much
less.
What is missing
A weight.
A metal cart, 80 cm long, on four 20 cm wheels, is not light before a hose goes
on it, and the whole point of wheels is that it does not have to be carried.
It does have to be lifted over a step, into a shed, and off a trailer. That
figure is not published by any product on this shelf.
