Long handles and steel spikes

Walensee reaches two shelves here, and both entries share a design intention: do the job standing up.

The aerator is a rolling spike type with a long handle and multiple rows of steel spikes. What that puts in the ground is solid tines, which displace soil rather than removing a core — worth knowing, because on heavy clay a solid spike can compact the hole wall while relieving the surface. The hollow-tine tools that remove a core are a different article on the same shelf, and this site says which is which.

The weed puller is the standing version of a hand fork: a three-jaw head on a metre-long shaft, with a mechanism that grips the root rather than cutting the top off it. On the weeder shelf that is the meaningful distinction — a tool that takes the taproot and a tool that scrapes a joint are both sold under the same German word.
