Verda SN1302 review

Three brushes, 250 mm wheels and a stated 0 to 40 mm height range — the most completely described push sweeper here.

The bottom line The only push sweeper here that publishes all three of the numbers that matter: three brushes, a 0 to 40 mm height range, and 250 mm wheels. Big wheels are not a detail on a manual machine — they are the gearing, and they decide how fast the brushes turn for a given walking pace.

What the maker prints on its own page

A leaf sweeper that picks up dry leaves and small garden waste quickly, stated as ideal for lawns and garden paths. The 53 cm working width allows quick work on larger areas. The 100-litre container allows longer work without constant emptying and is easy to empty. A long push handle and large wheels make the machine easy to guide. It works without electricity, battery or fuel — push it and it collects. Three sweeping brushes pick up leaves and dirt, and the 250 mm wheels make pushing easier. The central height adjustment runs from 0 to 40 mm for different surfaces and types of debris.

The three figures

Brush count, height range, wheel diameter. Eight machines on this shelf and this is the only one to give all three.

Each of them changes how the machine behaves:

Three brushes decide how many sweeps happen per turn of the shaft — more contact, more pick-up, more resistance at the handle.

0 to 40 mm decides whether the machine suits a hard drive or long grass. At zero the brushes are on the surface; at 40 mm they are clearing it.

250 mm wheels decide the gearing. The brush shaft is driven from the wheels, so a bigger wheel spins the brushes more for each metre you walk. On a machine with no motor, that is the nearest thing to a power specification.

What the wheel diameter really buys

Two things at once, and they pull in opposite directions.

A large wheel rolls over uneven ground more easily and turns the brushes faster. It also makes the machine taller and slightly harder to push at the same brush pressure.

250 mm is the only figure published on this shelf, so it has nothing to be compared with here — but it is a substantial wheel for a machine of this size.

The same limit as its neighbours

Dry leaves and dry debris. The listing says dry in its first line, which is honest: rotating brushes and wet leaves do not get on, and no machine on this shelf claims otherwise.

What this machine usually gets asked

Why do big wheels matter?

Because they are the transmission. The brush shaft is geared to the wheels, so a larger wheel turns the brushes more times per metre walked. On a manual sweeper, wheel diameter is the closest thing there is to a power figure.

What does 0 to 40 mm mean?

How far the brush assembly can be raised above its lowest setting. Zero is the brushes down on the surface, for a hard drive; 40 mm lifts them for long or uneven grass where a low setting would drag.

Three brushes or four?

More brushes means more contact per revolution and more resistance to push. Three across 53 cm is the usual arrangement on this shelf; the one four-brush machine here is also the widest.

Who this one is for

A medium lawn where the surface is uneven enough that the height setting will get used
