Three things the listing names, all of which matter
A fold-out foot. The maker calls it Kick and Stand and it addresses the
single most annoying behaviour of a hose cart: you walk away with the nozzle,
the hose runs out, and the cart tips over and follows you. A foot that folds
out with a boot and takes the pull is the fix.
A drip stop. So the cart does not empty its hose across the garage floor
when you wheel it in. A 60 metre hose holds a surprising amount of water, and
without a stop every trip to the shed leaves a trail.
A hose guide. A fixed arm the hose passes through, so it lays in even
layers as you turn the crank. The listing’s phrasing is the honest version of
the benefit — you only touch the crank, so your hands stay clean.
Anybody who has wound a wet muddy hose onto a bare drum, one hand feeding and
one hand cranking, knows what is being avoided.
Up to 60 m.
Of what bore, the listing does not say.
This matters more than it sounds. A drum holds a volume, and a 3/4 inch hose
has a much bigger outside diameter than a 1/2 inch one. One listing on this
shelf states the same drum’s capacity three times — 45 m at 1/2 inch, 30 m at
5/8, 20 m at 3/4 — and the spread is more than a factor of two.
A bare “up to 60 m” is the best case, for the thinnest hose. It is not wrong
and it is half a specification.
No hose
The delivery line is explicit: one cart.
That is worth stating plainly because this shelf mixes two kinds of product,
and the price comparison is meaningless without it.
Include a hose: four products here, three of them wall boxes with a fixed
20 or 30 metres inside.
Do not: this cart, one other cart, and an aluminium stand.
A 60 metre hose costs a substantial fraction of what this cart costs, so a cart
without one is not the cheaper option it appears to be — unless you already
have the hose, which is exactly who this is for.
Frost resistance, and what it means
The listing claims frost resistance for the cart’s own components.
That is about the plastics — a cart left in an unheated shed through a
winter should not become brittle and crack.
It says nothing about water left in a hose, which freezes, expands and splits
regardless of what the reel is made of. Draining before winter remains the rule
on this shelf and on the hose shelf next to it.
Both stated in the listing, and the first is the practical one: a metal-framed
cart that goes together without a spanner is a better Saturday than one that
does not.
