Pre-assembled, and that is the pitch
Spiked shoes normally arrive as a kit: two soles, a bag of nails, a bag of
washers, a bag of nuts, two spanners.
Assembling them means pushing each nail through from underneath and fitting a
washer and a nut to every one, by hand, forty-odd times. It is not difficult.
It is an evening, and it is the most common complaint about the category.
These arrive done. The listing leads with it and that is a fair thing to lead
with.
The lock nuts
The second sensible detail.
Every step puts a sideways load on every nail. A plain nut on a threaded shank
under that load turns, slowly, and after a season some nails are loose and one
or two are gone.
The listing names safety nuts, which is the right component. It does not make
an annual check pointless — two minutes before the first use each spring is
still the sane habit — but it is the difference between checking and
retightening.
The sprung dual sole
The claim is that a two-layer sole with spring action keeps soil from sticking
to the nail plate.
Soil sticking is a real problem: after twenty steps on damp clay the underside
of each shoe is a brick, the nails are buried in it, and they stop reaching
the grass at all. Anything that sheds that is worth having.
Whether a sprung sole achieves it, the listing does not demonstrate and this
page does not test. It is reported as the mechanism claimed.
Nail length.
On a spiked shoe that is the whole specification. It is the depth of every hole
you make and nothing else about the product changes it.
A comparable pair on this shelf publishes two lengths, 55 mm and 40 mm, and
supplies both. This one publishes none, and costs more.
That is the comparison, and this page leaves it there rather than guessing at a
figure.
Solid nails, as everywhere on this shelf except one
A nail displaces soil sideways rather than taking it away.
On light soils the distinction hardly matters. On a wet clay, pushing solid
steel in compresses the walls of each hole, and the ring around it ends up
denser than it began.
One product on this shelf uses hollow tines that lift a core out instead. It is
slower and it costs about the same, and on heavy ground it is the one that does
what the word “aerate” promises.
