What this wire is for
One failure, and it is the one that ends a robot’s season: a spade through the
loop.
Every other wire on this shelf is 2.7 mm of insulated conductor and can be cut
by a fork, an edging iron or a mole. This one is 3.4 mm with a steel braid
inside the sheath, and the entire listing is about that.
What the maker prints on its own page
Maximum armouring through a four-layer construction, only 0.7 mm thicker than a
standard cable but stated to give extreme resistance — lay it once and have
permanent peace in the garden. 3.4 mm diameter.
Spade-proof and bite-proof: thanks to the integrated high-strength steel braid,
the cable is stated to be effectively protected against accidental spade
strikes during garden work, and rodents such as voles break their teeth on the
metal armouring.
The four layers are given as a UV-resistant outer sheath, a break-resistant
steel braid, a plastic reinforcement for tensile strength, and a high-quality
conductor core of galvanised copper for lossless signal.
Highest signal quality: the maker states that, unlike cheap aluminium cables, it
uses galvanised copper of the highest grade, and that the galvanising prevents
oxidation and guarantees years of perfect communication with the robot.
Universally compatible with named models.
The claim, weighed
“Spade-proof” is a strong word and this page reports it as the maker’s.
The principle is sound: a braided steel layer spreads a cutting load across many
strands rather than letting a blade part one conductor. A determined spade on a
hard surface will still cut most things.
What it certainly does is change the odds, on the failure that matters, in a
garden where digging happens.
Galvanised copper
Five of the seven wires here are copper-clad aluminium. This is copper, zinc
coated.
Copper conducts better at the same section, which matters over 150 metres. The
zinc resists oxidation — and oxidation at a cut end or inside a joint is exactly
where a boundary loop’s resistance creeps up over the years.
The listing makes the argument against aluminium directly. It is a sales point
and it is also correct.
The one practical catch
3.4 mm is thicker than the 2.7 mm everything else on this shelf uses.
Waterproof connectors are sized for a cable diameter. Splicing this into an
existing standard loop needs joints that accept both, and that is worth
checking before the wire is in the ground.
