Three of the seven listings on this shelf say what the filter is made of, and
this is the most complete of them. It matters for one practical reason: paper
never washes.
Water collapses the pleats and the element never filters properly again. The
only cleaning is a gentle tap. Owners who wash a paper filter and refit it are
running an engine on unfiltered air and do not know it.
Why pleating
The listing makes its own argument and it is right.
A mower’s air filter sits in a small housing, immediately behind a blade that
is deliberately throwing dust into the air. It has the hardest job of any
filter on a domestic machine and the least room to do it in.
Folding the paper packs several times the area into the same box: less
resistance to the air the engine wants, and far more dust held before it
chokes.
The metal mesh is what stops the pleats collapsing under the airflow.

That breadth is the point: the filter belongs to an engine family, and that
engine family went into a great many different machines. A buyer with a Honda
